Portrait Commissions

Mark Ward undertakes a limited number of portrait commissions each year, and these portraits are intended as lasting works, created for private collectors, professional figures and institutional settings.

Each portrait is developed as a considered collaboration, with attention given not only to likeness, but to presence, setting and long-term significance. The intention is to produce a work that will endure — both as a personal record and as a cultural object.

The Process

Commissions begin with an initial discussion to understand the sitter, the intended context of the portrait, and the overall direction of the work.

Where appropriate, Mark conducts a dedicated photographic sitting, allowing lighting, pose and atmosphere to be carefully directed. This ensures that the final painting is constructed with clarity and intention rather than relying on informal reference.

The painting is then developed in the studio, with key stages shared as needed, while preserving the integrity of the artistic process.

The Investment

Portrait commissions typically begin from £1,500.

Final cost varies according to scale, complexity and number of sitters.

A detailed proposal is provided following initial consultation.

Contexts for Commission

Portraits are commissioned for a range of settings, including:

Private homes and family collections

Professional and corporate environments

Academic and institutional settings

Each portrait is designed with its final setting in mind, ensuring it holds presence within its intended space.
